COMMANDER: DENNIS P. FRIZZI Jr. HOME ASSOCIATION PRES: GARY RENEKER
SR. VICE COMMANDER: BARRY DANDO MANAGER: MARY PINES
FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMANDER
As some of you already know, there has been a change of Commanders at Post 143. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the immediate past Commander Dave Taylor for his Five outstanding years guiding and growing
our Post to what it is today. We all thank you Dave!! Bravo Zulu on a job well done! Dave has assumed the Adjutant
position on your Board of Directors and will be in charge of Membership, so please recruit some friends and family
and see Dave. He will take care of you. I have set a goal of 150 new regular members by the end of 2008, so Dave
will be busy.
Now, about the new guy. I have been your SR. Vice Commander for the past two years, previously I was your
Service Officer. I was born and bred in New Cumberland, Cedar Cliff Class of 1979. I proudly served from 1982-1992
in the US Navy as a Sonar Technician First Class/Master Training Specialist stationed aboard the USS Scott DDG-
995 and the USS Virginia CGN-38. Many of you knew my parents before they passed. Dennis P.Frizzi Sr.,worked at
the front desk of the New Cumberland Post Office for over 25 years . Brenda Frizzi, worked at the American Legion
State Auxiliary Headquarters in Wormleysburg and was very involved in our Post Auxiliary. It is because of her that I
became involved in the American Legion and it is to her that I dedicate my year as your Commander. I will try my very
best to make them and you proud.
There have also been many changes to our Post. I would like to welcome all the new board members. Thank you in
advance for all your selfless dedication in the upcoming year and good luck with all your fundraising events, and we
look forward to working together as a team on many events for both our members and our community.
We are going to try a couple things differently this year. Once a Quarter, I will be holding a “Commanders Meet &
Greet”. This will be tailored after a Navy “Captains Call” which is held quarterly aboard all Navy ships and allows the
crew to get to know the Captain and air any grievances, concerns or highlights without fear of repercussion. The
purpose is to meet with any and all membership to have an open forum on the American Legion, State of the Post,
upcoming
events, etc. and to field any and all questions. The first “Commanders Meet & Greet” will be Thursday November 8th at
7PM, so please join me and your fellow members for camaraderie and an informal discussion. Make a difference,
become involved. We all benefit.
Another big change has been our new website. It is at WWW.AmericanLegionPost143.com and has been up and
running for @ 6 months. It is our intention that this website will be your home away from home to keep current with the
Post and all our events. The website is loaded with information and pictures from past events such as Toys For Tots,
Nutsy Open, Halloween Party, Memorial Day Parade, as well as many links for veterans information. Check it out and
let us know any additional information or features you would like to see added. It is your living, breathing, ever-
changing website and we want to provide you with the best Post Website on the internet.
In conjunction with the website, if you have access to the internet, this will be the last mass mailed newsletter sent
though the mail. To save the cost of printing and mailing this newsletter to all members, we would ask that you view or
print this newsletter off of the website. If you do not have access to the internet and wish to continue to receive this
newsletter through the mail, please either (A) Call the club from 8-12AM to have you name added to the newsletter
mailing list, or (B) Drop us a letter or postcard either at the club in the suggestion box or in the mail and we will gladly
send your newsletter through the mail.
This Veterans Day, November 11, 2007 we will again host a dinner at the Post for our Veterans. In addition, we will
be showing movies on our new big screen TV in the Middle Dining Room at 12 and 2:30 with popcorn, light snacks and
beverages provided. We are open to suggestions for the movies. Dinner will be served at 5:00PM at the Post. Please
call the Post at 774-2294 to make reservations for dinner, because we are limited to 80 people in the banquet room.
Dinner choices will be a home made meatloaf dinner or turkey dinner. Please join us for a movie and a dinner.
This year, as in the past three, we will be supporting Toys for Tots. A box will be placed in the canteen for
donations. If you need a box for your work, please let us know. If you are not aware of it the Post supports Toys for
Tots in their annual Golf Tournament as well as donations. Ever wonder where all them empty aluminum cans go? To
the recycle center and all funds are donated to Toys for Tots in the form of toys. Every year two weeks before
Christmas, the officers and employees, with a truck donated by Andy Perlman of Lemoyne Sleeper, go off for a
morning of buying lots of toys for this area’s children. We will deliver the toys along with Police, Fire and Marine Corps
Motorcycle Club escorts at 12 PM December 8. We invite any and all members to join us in the procession that day. It
truly is heartwarming and unforgettable.
The past two years we have also gone Christmas Caroling. We visited members who have been continuous Post 143
members for 42-60 years!! This year I would like to expand this event to have 2-4 groups off @ 10 people per group
so we can reach even more of our local members. We will rehearse on Mon Dec 17 at 7PM and carol on Tues Dec 18
at 6PM. We will provide songsheets, detailed maps and treats so all you have to do is show up with your Christmas
spirit. This was a spur of the moment “new” tradition started by Dave Taylor 2 years ago and it has quickly become
one of my favorite nights of the year. We will also be caroling at the Lebanon VA Hospital on Sat December 22 for
anyone interested in joining us.
Bingo will be ending Oct 31, 2007
We are now stocking Post 143 merchandise for our members. We currently have Tee Shirts, Polo Shirts, and
Sweatshirts and will soon have hats and license plates. Please check out the display case in the entrance foyer. We
are open to ideas for future merchandise so drop us a suggestion, we value your opinions.
I would like to congratulate past Post 143 Commanders Pete Wasco and Bob Heffelfinger who just completed their
successful terms as District 19 and Cumberland County Commanders respectfully. District 19 finished second in the
State in membership at over 102% because of Pete’s dedication to the American Legion. We are proud and thankful to
have you both as members and representatives of Post 143.
Thanks for bearing with me, I had a lot to say in this first newsletter. I will be updating the Commanders Call Section
on the website monthly so check it out when you have a free minute. I am honored, humbled and extremely proud to
have been nominated and elected as your Commander for 2008. I know I have a lot to learn and am fortunate that
your elected Board of Directors includes 5 Past Commanders with countless years of American Legion experience to
mentor and guide me. I will give you, our membership, 200% effort and am very excited about the fun and challenging
year that lies ahead in 2008. Ours truly is a great Post and can only get better with your help. My door is always open
and my ear always ready for input from all members.

FROM THE SERVICE OFFICER
I would like to inform our members of programs that the American Legion provides that all members might not be aware
of. New in 2006 the American Legion developed a Discount Prescription Program this program is free to all Legion
members including Sons of American Legion (SAL) and the Legion Auxiliary. The program was established by
RxAmerica and by showing your membership card at participating pharmacies you may receive a discount on your
prescription costs. They also provide a mail service that members may enroll in by calling 1-866-792-6534. This mail
order service is guaranteed to be more cost effective than AARP mail service. The National Headquarters claims that
most participants in this program have saved as much as 20% off of their prescription costs. The American Legion also
offers Medicare part D for members and their families who are Medicare eligible. Premiums for this coverage start under
$23.00 in most states and to learn more about this coverage you may call 1-800-811-5376, this phone number is
exclusive to American Legion members only. This is just 2 of the programs that the American Legion has established to
help save veterans and its members money. There are other discounts available as well, such as FTD florist gives 10%
discounts to Legion members and Travel discounts are available on the Legion Web Site at www.legion.org and click on
the travel link near the bottom of that page or by calling 1-800-676-1004. I just wanted to cover some useful programs
that your membership entitles you too, that all members may not have been aware of. It is often difficult to keep up with
all the various savings that we may be entitled to but I will try my best to keep our members informed of these programs.

FROM THE AUXILIARY
It has been a long time since our last newsletter. I hope you are well and enjoyed a wonderful summer.
We have many events scheduled for 2007-2008. Our largest event is our annual Halloween Bash. This years
Bash will be held on Friday, October 26, 2007 from 9pm till 1am. There will be a D.J., a light buffet, 50/50 drawing and a
costume judging contest with monetary awards. The money we raise at our party helps purchase gifts for the children in
the Cumberland County Shelter. We have a great time at the Halloween bash and hope you will join us for a night of fun.
Costumes are not required, but every year more and more people come in costume making this night very special.
Please see any Auxiliary member to purchase tickets.
“Breakfast with Santa” will be held on Saturday December 8th at 10:00am. This event is open to Post 143 members and
their children age 10 and under. A sign up sheet will be placed in the Post closer to the date. We cannot accept anyone
at the door for this event.
Please remember to renew your Auxiliary dues. Sue Stottle has taken over the membership duties for our unit. If
you have any questions regarding your Auxiliary membership, please contact Sue at 730-0720.
Ouir next Auxiliary meeting will be held on Monday October 30 due to the Halloween Parade on our usual Tuesday. I
hope you will join us!

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION
First, I would like to thank all that purchased Raffle Tickets from the S.A.L. for our child welfare Raffle. We raised $
920.00! Congatulations to Bob Gulas, Kay Bird, Beth Davis, Sarah Kitzmiller and Larry Bishop who were the lucky
winners.
Secondly I would like to congratulate the new officers. I know we will have a good year. Last year we donated $
5,000.00 to Child Welfare. We had the highest donation of any Squadron in Pennsylvania! We are working to double
that this year..
We have our Turkey and Cheese blitz coming up November 17, 2007 from 1:00PM to 7:00PM. Tickets will be on sale
starting at the Aux. Halloween Party. Come out and support the S.A.L. and the Aux.
We will be having another Child Welfare raffle between Thanksgiving and Christmas, watch your mail.
We will also have our Ham and Cheese Blitz in March and the Dean Rodgers Golf Tournament in May. More info in
the next newsletter.
Our meetings are still the second Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30PM. Come out and get involved. There is a
standing invitation to any S.A.L, Aux. And Legion member to attend our meetings, all are welcome. Hope to see some
new faces at the meetings.
Check out our website also. There is a link of the Post site. It has lot of info and pictures of our events. Steve has
done a great job over the years updating the site, thanks Steve!
We need to remember we are more than a bar. We do a lot for the community. Again I would like to thank all for
participating in our functions.

HOME ASSOCIATION
It has been a while since our last newsletter. Since the last letter we have made a lot of changes that you can
notice upon entering the Post and some that were just better for our great members internally.
The foyer, dining room, canteen and rest rooms have been thoroughly cleaned and freshly painted. We also
replaced the carpet and table cloths in the dining room, Mary picked some very nice colors for these and it really
brightened up the dining room so come out for dinner and see what you think.
Another big change is our parking lot across Market Street, which gave us another 15 parking spaces, which does
not seem like a lot until you are the one looking for a place to park.. All our parking areas now are also well lighted and
both parking lots are completely covered by the security cameras, so if you think you have a problem please let the
bartender know immediately so that it can be checked out and hopefully your problem can be resolved.
I would like to let everyone know again that the handicapped parking spaces are only for people with disabilities. You
must have a handicapped license plate or placard, without one of the other your vehicle can be towed at your expense
and you could receive a up to a $ 500.00 fine.
Please remember that the bartenders are the “boss” and if they ask you to calm down or leave you must listen as you all
know and have been told that we back them 110 percent.
We would like to welcome a new cook Darlene Miller, who come to us with many years experience. Come in and make
her welcome, we know you will enjoy her home made soups and specials.
Well that’s about it for now. Please feel free to talk with me anytime, I am here to help all members and will always do my
best to answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

MANAGERS REPORT
Congratulation to our new Commander Denny Frizzi and his officers, the Home Association looks forward to
working closely with them in the coming year.
The day to day operations of the canteen have been very busy. We have a monthly average of over 4,000 members
visiting our facility. The new internet jukebox has proven to be very popular as well as the Golden Tee golf game, trivia
games and pool table.
The dining room business also has seen tremendous growth with 75-100 dinners being served on average Friday
evening. We hope you all have been in to try the good food, if not you are missing out on some great meals. A monthly
calendar is available at the Post or on the website listing daily specials. Let you friends know that the dining room is
open to the public.
I would like to remind everyone of the suggestion box located in the foyer. If you have suggestions for events, food
ideas or general comments please feel free to drop a note. All suggestions will be carefully considered, but must be
signed.
With fall arriving soon, the holidays will be rapidly approaching, so please stop in the Post to check the boards for
upcoming events and parties. Also check the website. Remember the club is only as good as the members make it.

SPORTS NEWS
The Nutsy Open Golf Tournament was held on August 26 with great success. Over $6,000 was raised and split up
in four $1500.00 checks going to The NC Fire Department, NC EMS, NC Public Library, and NC Senior Citizens Center
and a great time was had by all. Special thanks to Ron Callahan, Rich Johnson, and Matty Dankman for all their efforts
to make it happen. More info on next years event will follow.
We have winter Monday Doubles and Thursday Singles night league pool teams now playing. Best of luck and we
support you 100%.
Congratulations to the 2007 Pennsylvania American Legion 5 Man Team State Bowling Champions from Post
143. Matty, Bob, Steve, Gene and Jeff brought home the trophy by beating out over 65 teams from across the state at
ABC West. Great job guys! Their trophy is on display in our trophy case in the foyer. Because of their efforts it looks like
Post 143 will host the 2009 State tournament giving our Post tremendous exposure.
We have made arrangements to hold a 9 hole Thursday Night mixed two man team Golf League in the
spring/summer 2008 at Riverview Golf Course. We hope to start in April, weather permitting. More info to follow, but get
your teams ready now and sign up at the Post.
Congratulations also go out to Post 143 American Legion Baseball team who posted another tremendous season.
They are loaded with young talent and we look forward to another great season next year. Special recognition goes out
to Corey Latshaw who played his way into the Pennsylvania State East West All Star game held on City Island.
The team also made a special trip north after the season and got chance to play on the Field of Dreams at the
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY. We were told it was a trip of lifetime for the all involved.
On Sunday September 16, 2007 while most others were gathered around the television watching football, a loyal,
dedicated group of 26 members from Post 143 spent the most heartwarming afternoon imaginable hosting a cookout for
100 Veterans and Staff at the Lebanon V.A. Hospital.
Ed,Bob,Skip and Dave were the "grillmasters" who barbecued 60 New York Strips and 40 Pounds of Chicken
Breasts for our hungry Veterans. Colleen, who organized this trip, and our second to none Auxiliary manned the serving
line which was loaded with an assortment of home made side dishes provide by "The Girls". The desserts were mouth
watering home made pies made by Mellisa, who is too young to know how to bake so well!!
Denny spun his usual assortment of great music. We were entertained by one of the veterans who sang "God Bless
the USA" (even though some of the Vets jokingly groaned saying "don't let HIM sing again"!!, seems he likes the
microphone)
We also donated over 10,000 minutes of phone cards for our proud Veterans to use at their convenience.
The Veterans and Staff couldn't thank us enough. To a man, they all said it was the best cookout ever at the V.A
Hospital, bar none!!!!I know that may be biased because we brought Steak and Chicken instead of the usual Hot Dogs
and Hamburgers, but I know deep down in my heart that it was because of the wonderful people of Post 143 that made it
so great and so unforgettable.
I have never been so proud to be a part of a group as I was on this day. It brought tears to my eyes many times
watching the unselfish and dedicated teamwork of our Post 143 superstars. It is truly a privilege to know you all, and it is
an honor to call you my friend. I can't thank you enough. God bless you all.
